WELCOME!
Judith Ging invites you to read and experience her novel about US education.
Who will be the next student to bring a weapon to school? What teacher will be arrested for child abuse in today’s headlines?
You are about to read an intriguing novel, The Hex of Hemlock, about what could be going on right now in any school across the nation. Regardless of class, race, or economic factors, all citizens today need to take a long look at why so many unsavory events make news.
Ging tells the story of Joe Bloom’s struggle to save a Midwest school district from the greed, jealousy, and the thirst for power that runs rampant in the community.
Ging’s novel is reminiscent of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, in that the shocking events in her novel are as unsettling as some of those events which prompted Sinclair to publish his novel underground. His novel had such an effect on history that the federal government made it its business to research and then regulate the food industry.
While Ging does not offer answers to the concerns she notes, she does provoke thought and hope that readers will be more moved to voice their concern about their children’s education than they might otherwise have been. Since we have already entered Orwell’s “Brave New World,” we must be diligent keepers of our children’s right to justice.
The Hex of Hemlock also honors the many strong and excellent teachers who dare to make a difference in the lives of children every day.
